Approved heart health claim in the UK

In March 2005 the Scientific Advisory Committee of the UK approval body for health claims on foods, the Joint Health Claims Initiative (JHCI), approved a heart health claim for long chain omega 3s, the best of kind of these fatty acids. The approved claim is as follows:

'Eating 3g weekly, or 0.45g daily, long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, as part of a healthy lifestyle, helps maintain heart health'.

This is the equivalent of eating two portions (140g each) of oil rich fish a week. The heart health claim was only the fifth health claim to have been approved by the JHCI.
