In March 2005 the Scientific Advisory Committee of the UK approval body for health claims on foods, the Joint Health Claims Initiative (JHCI), approved a heart health claim for long chain omega 3s, the best of kind of these fatty acids. The approved claim is as follows: 'Eating 3g weekly, or 0.45g daily, long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, as part of a healthy lifestyle, helps maintain heart health'.This is the equivalent of eating two portions (140g each) of oil rich fish a week. The heart health claim was only the fifth health claim to have been approved by the JHCI.
