Fish and shellfish farming is extremely important to the Orkney economy. Salmon are farmed in cages. Oysters are grown in trays fixed to the seabed, while mussels are cultivated on ropes suspended from the surface. Aquaculture has been described as the most significant new industry to emerge in the Highlands and Islands over the last 30 years.
