Aquaculture in Europe

The aquaculture industry in Scotland is committed to sustainable production, ensuring that we preserve the rural environment in which we operate, whilst maintaining economic growth and employment at the same time for all of us to benefit from. Further information on the aquaculture industry’s commitment to sustainable production, and examples from across Europe, can be found on the following pages.

Aquamedia: www.aquamedia.org

Aquamedia provides up-to-date and accurate information about aquaculture.

It is supported by the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP), which is composed of 31 national aquaculture associations from 22 European nations that contribute more than 1.2 million tons of fish to the European markets.

The members of FEAP, who are the national producer associations and whose members are the farmers themselves, represent the vast majority of the farmed species throughout Europe.

Consensus: Sustainable Aquaculture in Europe

Consensus: Sustainable Aquaculture in Europe is an initiative funded by the European Commission Sixth Framework Programme of Research and Technological Development in the area of Food Quality and Safety.

It is driven by major European stakeholders representing consumer interests, aquaculture producers, aquatic feed suppliers, environmental, animal health and welfare groups, as well as by stakeholders from various levels of legislative bodies in both the EU and Member States.

European Aquaculture Society: www.easonline.org

Established in 1975, the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) provides another point of reference across the EU on aquaculture-related information.

The EAS aims to promote contacts between all involved in marine and freshwater aquaculture; facilitate the circulation of aquaculture related information; promote the sponsorship of multi-disciplinary research concerning aquaculture; and enhance aquacultural cooperation among governmental, scientific and commercial organisations.
