Shellfish farming threatened by new planning powers - 11 October 2007

The development of Scottish shellfish farming is seriously threatened by the introduction of inappropriately high planning application fees, according to the Scottish Shellfish Growers Association (SSGA).

Following the transfer of planning to local authorities in April 2007, the new scheme will potentially see the costs increase from £100-£150 to thousands of pounds.

For example, the SSGA says that a planning application for a small, six longline site has been calculated as attracting a charge ranging from £3000 - £11000 depending on the local authority region.
