First Minister highlights importance of Shetland economy - 03 March 2008

Following the First Minister's visit to Shetland this week when he moved to strengthen the region’s representation on the National Economic Forum, David Sandison, Company Secretary of Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation and the boss of Shetland Aquaculture, said:

“We warmly welcome the government’s aim to increase sustainable economic growth in remote, rural communities in the Highlands and Islands.

“Aquaculture is one of the foremost food sectors in Scotland producing healthy and nutritious seafood to the value of over £400m per year, which makes it second only to beef at £467m.

“Significant investment is being made in many parts of our industry and we now need to turn our expertise into jobs and growth.

“An ambitious vision from the Scottish Government to make Scotland a more competitive place to do business is the right kind of message, as it is likely to encourage further investment in areas such as Shetland.”
